Unser Troopy ist bei der Agentur Freestyle Adventure Travel, welche zur Buchung einen Parkplatz bietet, eingestellt und unsere Koffer sind bei einer Sammelstelle abgegeben. Jetzt gilt es bis zur Einschiffung am Nachmittag noch etwas Zeit zu überbrücken, welche wir mit Kaffee trinken und spazieren verbringen. Dabei entdecken wir auch das Schiff, welches für die nächsten 10 Tage unser Zuhause sein wird: Mit der Ocean Explorer von Quark Expeditions sollen wir am Abend in See stechen.
Our Troopy is parked at the Freestyle Adventure Travel agency, which offers a parking space when you book with them, and our suitcases are dropped off at a collection point. Now we have some time to kill before embarkation in the afternoon, which we spend drinking coffee and strolling around. We also discover the ship that will be our home for the next 10 days: We are due to set sail in the evening on the Ocean Explorer from Quark Expeditions.
Nachdem sich alle 130 Gäste am Treffpunkt versammelt haben, werden wir mit einer kurzen Busfahrt aufs Hafengelände verfrachtet. Einen Willkommens-Cocktail später finden wir vor unserer Kabine auch gleich unser am morgen abgegebenes Gepäck vor. Kurz nach der Abfahrt, aber noch vor dem Abendessen dürfen alle mit Schwimmwesten ausgestattet zum Notfall Drill antraben. Während der ruhigen Fahrt entlang des Beagle Kanals, geniessen wir das leckere Abendessen, gehen auf Erkundungstour und sehen dem Piloten beim Verlassen des Schiffes über eine Strickleiter zu. So gegen drei Uhr morgens verlassen wir den wetterbehüteten Beagle Kanal und der Wellengang nimmt sofort spürbar zu. Der berüchtigten Drake Passage werden wir jetzt für mindestens 48 Stunden ausgesetzt sein. In der Hoffnung diese Passage unbeschadet zu überstehen, haben wir aber vorgesorgt und bereits seit dem Morgen vor der Abfahrt Reiseübelkeitstabletten eingeworfen.
After all 130 guests have gathered at the meeting point, we are taken on a short bus ride to the port area. A welcome cocktail later, we found the luggage we had dropped off in the morning in front of our cabin. Shortly after departure, but before dinner, we were all kitted out with life jackets for the emergency drill. During the calm journey along the Beagle Channel, we enjoy a delicious dinner, go on an exploration tour and watch the pilot leave the ship via a rope ladder. At around three o’clock in the morning, we leave the weather-protected Beagle Channel and the swell increases noticeably. We will now be exposed to the notorious Drake Passage for at least 48 hours. However, we have taken precautions and popped some travel sickness pills the morning before departure in the hope of surviving this passage unscathed.
Die Tabletten wirken mehr schlecht als recht, so lassen wir einen Grossteil der leckeren Mahlzeiten sowie die Präsentationen über die Tierwelt und Geologie der Antarktis aus. Nur zu der obligatorischen Stiefelanprobe sowie zur Biosicherheitsüberprüfung der Bekleidung und Equipments schaffen wir es mehr schlecht als recht. Nach zwei Tagen sind endlich die Südlichen Shetlandinseln in Sicht. Der erste Zodiac Ausflug soll zu der eisfreien Barrientos Insel gehen wo Esels-und Zügelpinguine brüten. Diese zwei Arten werden als subantarktische Pinguine eingeordnet. Wir ziehen mehrere Schichten Thermounterwäsche und darüber die wasserdichten Hosen sowie die gelben Parkas über und machen uns nachdem unsere Gruppe aufgerufen wurde auf den Weg zum Schuhraum, wo wir unsere Gummistiefel fassen können.
The medication doesn’t work as well as it should, so we skip most of the delicious meals and the presentations on the wildlife and geology of Antarctica. We only make it to the obligatory boot fitting and the biosafety check of our clothing and equipment. After two days, the South Shetland Islands are finally in sight. The first Zodiac excursion takes us to the ice-free Barrientos Island where gentoo and chinstrap penguins breed. These two species are classified as sub-Antarctic penguins. We put on several layers of thermal underwear, waterproof pants and yellow parkas and, after our group has been called, make our way to the gear room where we can grab our rubber boots.
Das Schiff wird jeweils in der Nacht oder während des Mittagessens umpositioniert. So kommen wir pro Tag auf sicher zwei mehrstündige Bootsausflüge und Landgänge. Nebst den Präsentationen, den Nachmittagstees und Häppchen sowie all den Briefings und Debriefings kommt schon beinahe etwas Stress auf.
The boat is repositioned at night or during lunch. This means that we get to enjoy two boat trips and shore excursions of several hours per day. In addition to the presentations, afternoon teas and snacks as well as all the briefings and debriefings, it is almost a bit stressful.
An Tag 4 an Bord, geht es nach Cuverville Island, welches im Errera Kanal liegt. Die Insel wurde vom Belgischen Polarforscher Adrien de Gerlache während der Belgica Antarktis Expedition von 1897- 1899 entdeckt. Dort soll es 4461 brütende Eselspinguinpaare geben (selbst nachgezählt haben wir aber nicht). Am Nachmittag besuchen wir die kleine Bucht Neko Harbour, welche nach einem Fabrikschiff eines Walfangunternehmens benannt wurde, das dort von 1911-1924 im Einsatz war. Dies sollte auch unser erster Landgang auf dem Antarktischen Peninsula sein. Wir betreten also zum ersten Mal antarktisches Festland – mit gut desinfizierten Stiefeln versteht sich. Dort sehen wir auch zum ersten Mal einen der wahren antarktischen Adeliepinguine.
On day 4 aborad, the ship takes us to Cuverville Island, which lies in the Errera Channel. The island was discovered by the Belgian polar explorer Adrien de Gerlache during the Belgica Antarctic Expedition from 1897-1899. There are supposed to be 4461 breeding pairs of gentoo penguins there ( we didn’t count them ourselves though). In the afternoon, we visit the small bay of Neko Harbour, which was named after a factory ship of a whaling company that was in operation there from 1911 to 1924. This was also to be our first shore leave on the Antarctic Peninsula. So we set foot on the Antarctic mainland for the first time – with well-disinfected boots, of course. This is also where we spot one of the true Antarctic Adelie penguins for the first time.
Am nächsten Tag besuchen wir die Region rund um Rongé Island, welche ebenfalls von Adrien de Gerlache während der Belgica Antarktis Expedition entdeckt wurde. Am Nachmittag stand eine Zodiacfahrt rund um Useful Island herum auf dem Plan. Unsere Blicke schweiften dabei aber immer entlang der Gerlache-Strasse mit der Hoffnung erneut Buckelwale auf Krillfang zu erspähen. Und auch an diesem Tag hatten wir Glück. Die Wale kamen unserem Zodiac so nahe wie noch nie zuvor. Sie verrieten dabei ihr nächstes Auftauchen mit vielen aufsteigenden Luftblasen, welche helfen den Krill in die Enge zu treiben. Als Abschluss von diesem fünften Tag an Bord dürfen wir bei schönstem Sonnenschein ein BBQ Dinner auf Deck geniessen. Hier ist es nämlich bis spät in die Nacht noch hell.
The next day we visit the area around Rongé Island, which was also discovered by Adrien de Gerlache during the Belgica Antarctic Expedition. In the afternoon, a Zodiac cruise around Useful Island was on the agenda. Our eyes kept wandering along the Gerlache Strait in the hope of spotting humpback whales fishing for krill. We were lucky again that day. The whales came closer to our Zodiac than ever before. They gave away their next appearance with lots of rising air bubbles, which kept the krill at bay. To round off this fifth day on board, we enjoy a BBQ dinner on deck in the most beautiful sunshine, as it stays quite bright until late at night around here.
Früh morgens an Tag 6 durqueren wir den 11 km langen Lemaire Kanal, welcher an der schmalsten Stelle nur 800 Meter breit ist. Das Wetter ist einfach nur traumhaft und so freuen wir uns bereits auf den Ausflug mit den Zodiacs. Wir besuchen die Pléneau Bucht, wo viele riesige Eisberge auch vom weit entfernten Ross-Schelfeis auf Grund laufen und sich somit zu einem regelrechten Eisbergfriedhof auftürmen.
Early in the morning on day 6, we cross the 11 km long Lemaire Canal, which is only 800 meters wide at its narrowest point. The weather is simply fantastic and we are already looking forward to the excursion with the Zodiacs. We visit Pléneau Bay, where many huge icebergs from the distant Ross Ice Shelf run aground, forming a proper iceberg graveyard.
Am Nachmittag spazieren wir über die Petermann Insel, wo wir erneut Esels- und Adeliepinguine beobachten können. Die Tiere sind pausenlos damit beschäftigt sich gegenseitig Steine aus den Nestern zu klauen, was vom jeweiligen Bewohner lauthals kommentiert wird.
In the afternoon, we take a walk across Petermann Island, where we can once again observe gentoo and Adelie penguins. The animals are constantly busy stealing stones from each other’s nests, which is loudly commented on by the respective inhabitants.
Tag 7 und somit unseren letzten Tag in der Antarktis, verbringen wir rund um Portal Point und der Bancoft Bucht, wo sich riesige Gletscher bis ins Wasser erstrecken. Für die Mutigen bot sich hier auch die Chance einen Sprung ins kalte Antarktische Wasser zu wagen, worauf wir aber gerne verzichten.
Day 7, our last day in Antarctica, is spent around Portal Point and Bancoft Bay, where huge glaciers extend into the water. For the brave, there was also the chance to take a dip in the cold Antarctic water, but we gladly decided against it.
Das Abendessen können wir noch in Ruhe geniessen, danach macht sich die Ocean Explorer auf den zweitägigen Rückweg durch die Drake Passage. Nun ist zu unserem Pech aber Sturm angekündigt, so verbringen wir die 48 Stunden dauernde Überfahrt leidend in unserer Kabine und verlassen diese erst nach Ankunft in Ushuaia wieder. Das letzte Frühstück an Bord belebt unsere Lebensgeister wieder und so verlassen wir das Schiff gestärkt und bereits jetzt in Erinnerungen schwelgend. Es wird sicher noch eine ganze Weile dauern bis wir all diese wunderbaren Erlebnisse verarbeitet haben. Als schönes Erinnerungsstück dürfen wir den gelben Parka mit nach Hause nehmen. Es gibt da aber ein kleines Problem: wo verstauen wir das gute Stück in unserem Troopy bloss?
We get to enjoy dinner in peace, after which the Ocean Explorer sets off on the two-day return journey through the Drake Passage. Unfortunately for us, a storm is forecast, so we spend the 48-hour crossing suffering in our cabin and only leave it again after arriving in Ushuaia. The last breakfast on board revives our spirits and so we leave the ship revitalized and already reminiscing about the trip. It will certainly take us quite a while to process all these wonderful experiences. As a nice souvenir, we get to take the yellow parka home with us. But there’s a small problem: where do we stow it in our Troopy?
