Am Cape Leeuwin in Augusta treffen sich zwei Meere. Der Indische Ozean mischt sich hier mit dem südlichen Ozean. Das Kap ist auch gleichzeitig der südwestlichste Punkt Australiens.
Two oceans meet at Cape Leeuwin in Augusta. The Indian Ocean mixes with the Southern Ocean here. The cape is also the south-westernmost point of Australia.
Die Walsaison hier im Süden Australiens hat zwar Ende Mai erst begonnen, ich (Carmen) versuche aber trotzdem mein Glück und wage mich bei unruhigem Seegang auf eine zweistündige Whale Watching Tour. Ganz nach dem Motto: Man kann nie genug Wale gesehen haben. Und das Wagnis wird tatsächlich belohnt, denn die Wale springen links und rechts vom Boot und klatschen mit Getose wieder auf dem Wasser auf – was für ein Spektakel. Bei diesem rauen Seegang ist es schwierig die Kamera im Richtigen Moment oben zu haben. geschweige denn, auch noch die Seite auf dem Schiff zu wechseln, wenn drüben eine Walsichtung verkündet wird. Aber es sind genug springende Wale für alle da. Auf der ganzen Tour werden wir auch noch von Kaptölpeln begleitet. Die ungefähr gänsegrossen Seevögel gleiten elegant mit dem Boot mit.
Although the whale-watching season here in southern Australia only began at the end of May, I (Carmen) decide to try my luck anyway and venture out on a two-hour whale-watching tour despite the choppy seas. True to the motto: you can never have seen enough whales. And my daring is indeed rewarded, as the whales leap to the left and right of the boat and splash back down onto the water with a mighty splash – what a spectacle. With the sea so rough, it’s difficult to have the camera ready at just the right moment, let alone switch sides of the boat when a whale sighting is announced on the opposite side. Fortunately, there are enough leaping whales to delight everyone. On the full journey, we’re also accompanied by Cape gannets. These seabirds, roughly the size of geese, glide elegantly alongside the boat.
Kurz vor Ende der Tour stimmt dann alles: ich stehe am richtigen Ort – verkeilt zwischen der Kabinenwand und einer Leiter, die Kamera ist richtig ausgerichtet und stellt auch im passenden Moment scharf, so gelingt dann doch noch eine tolle Bilder Serie eines springenden Buckelwals.
Just before the end of the tour, everything falls into place: I’m standing in the right spot – wedged between the cabin wall and a ladder, the camera is correctly positioned and focuses at just the right moment, so I manage to capture a fantastic series of photos of a leaping humpback whale after all.
Vom Wind etwas verstrubbelt und auch erschöpfter als gedacht (was auch an den vorsorglich eingenommenen Reisetabletten liegen kann) aber mehr als glücklich über das tolle Erlebnis, bin ich am Ende der Tour froh wieder festen Boden unter die Füsse zu kriegen.
With my hair a bit tousled by the wind and more exhausted than I’d expected (which may also have been down to the travel sickness tablets I’d taken as a precaution), but more than happy with the fantastic experience, I’m glad to have solid ground under my feet again at the end of the tour.
