Wir haben vom Schifffahren bei Sturm offenbar noch nicht genug und entscheiden uns trotz rauem Seegang den Besuch von Rottnest Island nicht abzusagen. Denn die Insel beheimatet ein ganz spezielles Tierchen: das Quokka. Natürlich handelt es sich bei dieser Australischen Ikone auch um ein Beuteltier und wenn man den Sozialen Medien glaubt ist es sogar das «Glücklichste» von allen. Das Quokka, welches fast nur noch auf dieser Insel vorkommt, scheint nämlich immerzu zu lächeln. Das mag vielleicht auch an dem ständigen Touristenstrom und dem daraus folgenden Überfluss an Kuchen liegen. Um ein Quokka zu Gesicht zu bekommen muss man hier nicht wie bei vielen anderen Tieren die Augen wachsam aufs Gestrüpp gerichtet haben. Nein, man geht einfach zu der grossen Bäckerei, kauft sich etwas Leckeres zu essen und schon hat man die Aufmerksamkeit der flauschigen Kerlchen auf sicher.
We clearly haven’t had our fill of boating in stormy weather yet, and decide not to cancel our visit to Rottnest Island despite the rough seas. After all, the island is home to a very special little creature: the quokka. Naturally, this Australian icon is also a marsupial, and if social media is to be believed, it’s even the ‘happiest’ of them all. The quokka, which is now found almost exclusively on this island, seems to be smiling all the time. That might well be down to the constant stream of tourists and the resulting abundance of cake. To catch a glimpse of a quokka here, you don’t have to keep your eyes peeled for them in the undergrowth, as you do with many other animals. No, you simply head to the big bakery, buy yourself something tasty to eat, and you’re sure to have the attention of these fluffy little creatures.
Da die Quokkas bei unserer Ankunft früh morgens noch etwas schläfrig scheinen, machen wir erst einen ausgedehnten Spaziergang über die Insel. Wir hätten auch Fahrräder mieten können, aber bei dem starken Wind war uns nicht danach. Hätten wir sie gemietet, hätte es sicher auch in Strömen geregnet. So blieben wir vor grösseren Regenschauern verschont. Als wir zurück zum Hauptplatz kommen, sind die Fotoshootings mit den kleinen Rackern schon voll im Gange. Wir essen leckere Pizza zu Mittag und haben mehr als genug Zeit dem Treiben zuzuschauen und auch selber viele Fotos zu machen, da unsere eigentliche Rückfahrt um 14:00 Uhr aufgrund des Sturms auf später verlegt wurde.
As the quokkas still seem a bit sleepy when we arrive early in the morning, we first go for a long walk around the island. We could have hired bikes, but with the strong wind blowing, we didn’t feel like it. If we’d hired them, it would surely have been pouring with rain. By the time we get back to the main square, the photo shoots with the little rascals are already in full swing. We have a delicious pizza for lunch and have more than enough time to watch the action and take some photos ourselves, as our original return journey at 2 pm has been postponed until later due to the storm.
