Der südliche Küstenhighway führt uns entgegen seines Namens etwas von der Küste weg und um wieder dahin zurück zu kommen, wählen wir einen Route, die uns auch gleich durch den Stirling Range Nationalpark führt. Eine 42 km lange Kiesstrasse schlängelt sich durch die malerische Berglandschaft mit vielen endemischen Pflanzen und Tierarten. Wir erkennen kaum eines der zum Teil wirklich kurios geformten Gewächse wieder. Eben diese Biodiversität der Pflanzenwelt wird aber durch die Ausbreitung des Wurzelfäulnis verursachenden Pilz Phytophthora cinnamomi bedroht. So stehen an Wanderwegen Infotafeln und es wird darum gebeten, die Wanderschuhe besonders gründlich zu reinigen, um den Pilz nicht weiter zu verbreiten.
Contrary to its name, the Southern Coastal Highway takes us slightly away from the coast, and to get back there we choose a route that also takes us straight through Stirling Range National Park. A 42 km-long gravel road winds its way through the picturesque mountain landscape, home to many endemic plant and animal species.We can hardly recognise any of these plants, some of which are rather oddly shaped. However, it is precisely this biodiversity of the plant world that is threatened by the spread of the fungus Phytophthora cinnamomi, which causes root rot. As a result, there are information boards along the walking trails, and visitors are asked to clean their walking boots thoroughly to prevent the fungus from spreading further.
Uns gehen langsam die frischen Kleider aus, so steht uns in Albany ein halber Tag im Waschsalon bevor. Auch das muss manchmal sein. Zum Glück gibt es nebenan auch gleich ein Japanisches Restaurant, wo wir bei einem leckeren Mittagessen die Wartezeit überbrücken können.
We’re slowly running out of clean clothes, so once we arrive in Albany, we’ll be spending half a day at the laundromat. Sometimes that’s just the way it has to be. Luckily, there’s a Japanese restaurant right next door, where we can pass the time over a delicious lunch.
Wir folgen weiter dem südlichen Küstenhighway und dieser führt uns durch so einige waldige National Parks.
We continue along the southern coastal highway, which takes us through a number of wooded national parks.
Zur Übernachtung suchen wir uns nach wie vor Campingplätze in Strandnähe. Das Wetter wird dabei immer stürmischer. Es windet sehr stark und die Temperaturen bewegen sich zwischen 15-20 Grad Celsius. Eigentlich ideal für uns, auch wenn dabei der Sprung ins wirklich kühle Nass ausbleibt.
We’re still looking for campsites near the beach to spend the night. The weather is getting increasingly stormy. It’s very windy and temperatures are between 15 and 20 degrees. Actually ideal for us, even if it means we won’t be taking a dip in the really cool water.
