Der Yellowstone National Park empfängt uns von seiner besten Seite: Direkt nach dem Zahlhäuschen, wo wir uns gleich den Jahrespass für die Amerikanischen Nationalparks geleistet hatten, begrüsst uns dieser sehr gelassene Bison.
Yellowstone National Park welcomes us from its best side: Right after the pay booth, where we had bought the annual pass for the American National Parks, this very calm bison greeted us.
Wir verbringen die nächsten zwei Nächte auf dem Madison Campground gleich nach dem Westeingang zum Park. Den Platz hatten wir bereits vorreserviert, was auch gut war: Dieser Campingplatz war einer der wenigen, der noch offen hatte. So war er natürlich auch komplett ausgebucht. Offenbar ist hier bereits alles im Nebensaison Modus.
We would spend the next two nights at Madison Campground, which is located right after the West entrance to the park. We had already reserved the site in advance, which was fortunate, as this campground was one of the few that was still open – and thus fully booked. Apparently everything here is already in off-season mode.
Am nächsten Morgen ging die Parkbesichtigung mit dem nördlichen Abschnitt los. Anfangs dachten wir noch, dass wir an einem Tag den ganzen Park durchfahren können – was sich aber schnell als Fehleinschätzung unsererseits erweist: der Yellowstone ist flächenmässig gut sechsmal grösser als der Kanton Aargau. So besichtigen wir erst den oberen Ring mit all seinen grünblauen und orangen Pools, brodelnden Sümpfen, Canyons und dampfenden Löchern.
The next morning, the park viewing began with the northern section. Initially, we thought that we could drive through the whole park in one day – but this quickly turned out to be a misjudgement on our part: Yellowstone is a good six times larger than the canton of Aargau. So we first explored the upper ring with all its green-blue and orange pools, bubbling swamps, canyons and steaming holes.
Den zweiten Tag schliessen wir ab, so wie der erste begonnen hatte. Mit ein paar friedlich grasenden Bisons (hier «Buffalo» genannt) am Fluss. Am nächsten Tag starten wir früh morgens und alles ist noch in Nebelschwaden gehüllt. Die Sonne bricht aber bald durch und uns erwartet ein wunderschöner Tag. Wir können kaum glauben, dass all diese Farbenpracht von der Natur geschaffen wurde.
We conclude the second day as the first had begun. With a few peaceful grazing bison (here called «Buffalo») at the river. The next day, we start early in the morning. Everything is still a bit shrouded in fog. But the sun soon breaks through and a beautiful day awaits us. It is hard to believe that all this colorfulness was created by nature.
Den krönenden Abschluss unseres Parkbesuchs, bietet der «Old Faithful Geyser». Pünktlich wie ein Schweizer Uhrwerk, bricht er alle 1.5h mit einer Fontäne von bis zu 50 Metern aus.
The grand finale of our park visit, is offered by the «Old Faithful Geyser». Punctual like a Swiss clockwork, it erupts every 1.5h with a fountain of up to 50 meters.
