Wir fahren nicht direkt nach Vancouver sondern biegen bei Horseshoe Bay in Richtung Fährterminal nach Vancouver Island ab. Mal so vorneweg: Die «kleine» Insel ist mit 450 km Länge deutlich grösser als die Schweiz, es gibt also so einiges zu entdecken. Die Fährfahrt nach Nanaimo dauert ungefähr 1h 40 min und verläuft nach längerem Anstehen am Terminal – nein wir haben nicht vorgebucht, reibungslos. Das Rätsel, wem wohl die weisse Corvette gehört, wurde dann auch recht schnell gelöst.
Our journey does not take us directly to Vancouver, as at Horseshoe Bay we turn in the direction of the ferry terminal to Vancouver Island. Let’s start with this: With a length of 450 km, the «small» island is significantly larger than Switzerland, so there is a lot to discover. The ferry ride to Nanaimo takes about 1h 40 min and passes smoothly after lengthy queuing at the terminal – no we did not pre-book. The mystery of who probably owns the white Corvette was then also solved quite quickly.
In Nanaimo angekommen, zieht es uns auf dem Island Highway 19A (Scenic Ocean Route) Richtung Norden. Wir wurden durch mehrere Schilder vor Stassenüberquerungen durch Rehen gewarnt und hatten dies eher als Phänomen der Nacht abgetan. Aber prompt hüpfen drei Stück vor uns über die Strasse. Vorsicht ist Geboten!
Arriving in Nanaimo, we are drawn north on Island Highway 19A (Scenic Ocean Route). Several signs warned us of deer crossing the road and we dismissed this as a phenomenon of the night. But promptly three of them hopped across the road in front of us. Attention is required!
Den ersten Übernachtungsplatz finden wir bei Qualicum Beach. Wo wir am nächsten Tag Jutta und Michael treffen. Mit ihnen geht’s am Nachmittag auf eine lustige Runde Mini-Golf im Örtchen Parksville.
We find the first place to spend the night at Qualicum Beach, where we meet Jutta and Michael the next day. Together we play a round of mini golf in the afternoon in Parksville.
Von ihnen wurden wir auch auf die Insel Malcolm Island aufmerksam gemacht, wo es mit (sind wir mal ehrlich) VIEL VIEL Glück Orcas direkt von der Küste aus zu bestaunen geben soll. So machen wir uns in Richtung von Port McNeill auf, von wo die Fähre nach Sointula übersetzt. Auf dem Weg dahin übernachten wir unter anderem auf einer der gratis Recreation Sites gefühlt mitten im Urwald.
By them, we were made aware of Malcolm Island, where with (let’s be honest) a ton of luck you can observe orcas directly from the coast. So we head towards Port McNeill, from where the ferry takes us to Sointula. On the way there, we stay overnight on one of the free Recreation Sites in the middle of the jungle.
Mit Blick ins Grüne gibt’s den feinen Lachs zu Essen, welchen wir zuvor von Jutta und Michael geschenkt gekriegt hatten. Vielen Dank euch zwei!
