Von Anchorage geht die Reise auf dem Seward Highway weiter. Dieser führt entlang des Cook Inlet, einer Bucht des Golfs von Alaska, welche das Kenai Peninsula vom Festland trennt. Bei Flut sollen hier auch schon Beluga Wale gesichtet worden sein. Wir fahren heute aber bei Ebbe durch.
From Anchorage, the journey continues on the Seward Highway. The road leads along Cook Inlet, a bay of the Gulf of Alaska, which separates the Kenai Peninsula from the mainland. Beluga whales are said to have been sighted here at high tide. Today, however, we pass through at low tide.
Ein kurzer Tee Stopp hilft gegen den Regen und die Kälte. Die umliegenden Gebirgsketten lassen sich erahnen aber nicht blicken.
A short tea break helps against the rain and the cold. The surrounding mountain ranges can be glimpsed through the fog but not properly seen.
Der Seward Highway wechselt zum Sterling Highway. Dort entscheiden wir uns aber anstelle der neuen Route, den «Old Sterling Highway» in Angriff zu nehmen. Es handelt sich dabei um eine nicht mehr gewartete Kiesstrasse, welche auch beim Lake Kenai endet. Im kleinen Fluss namens Daves Creek, gleich neben dem Eingang zur 4×4 Strecke, tummeln sich die feuerroten Lachse. Der «Salmon run» scheint im Gange zu sein. Der Weg ist zwar holprig, aber unser Troopy bleibt unbeeindruckt.
The Seward Highway merges to the Sterling Highway. We decide to take the «Old Sterling Highway» instead of the new route. This is a no longer maintained gravel road, which also ends at Lake Kenai. In the small river called Daves Creek, right next to the entrance to the 4×4 route, we spot some red salmon. The «Salmon run» seems to be in progress. The trail is bumpy, but our Troopy remains unimpressed.
Vom Lake Kenai geht’s auf dem neuen Sterling Highway weiter Richtung Homer. Hier schnuppern wir zum ersten Mal auch so richtig Meerluft und spähen zwischen Baumlücken auf den Pazifik. Die Wolkendecke lichtet sich etwas und in der Ferne lässt sich eine Gebirgskette sehen. Darunter auch der Mount Redoubt, welcher 2009 zum letzten Mal ausbrach und somit zu den aktivsten Vulkanen Alaskas gehört. Am nächsten Morgen können wir sogar den Weisskopfseeadlern am Strand beim Frühstück zusehen.
From Lake Kenai, we continue on the new Sterling Highway towards Homer. For the first time, we get a real taste of the ocean air and between gaps in the trees we spot glimpses of the Pacific. The cloud cover cleared a bit and in the distance a mountain range could be seen. One of them is Mount Redoubt, which last erupted in 2009 and therefore is one of the most active volcanoes in Alaska. The next morning we could observe the bald eagles on the beach having breakfast.
In Homer angekommen, fahren wir auf einer schmalen Landzunge weiter bis nach Homer Spit. Viele Souvernirshops und Restaurants, welche zum Fischessen einladen, erwarten uns da.
Arriving in Homer, we continue on a narrow strip of land to Homer Spit. Many souvenir stores and restaurants, serving fish and other seafood, are awaiting us there.
Da sich das Wetter leider immer noch von seiner schlechten Seite zeigt, verzichten wir hier auf eine der oft angepriesenen Bootstouren. Wir machen an der «Land’s End» Tafel kehrt und die Reise geht in Richtung der historischen Stadt McCarthy weiter.
As the weather unfortunately still showed its unpleasant side, we decided not to go on one of the often advertised boat tours. We turn back at the «Land’s End» board and the journey continues in the direction of the historic town of McCarthy.
