Dem rauschenden Meer entlang, kurven wir Richtung Süden. Um jeden Rank taucht wieder eine neue in Gischt getauchte Küstenlandschaft auf. Wir treffen auch auf ein Schweizer Pärchen, die ebenfalls mit ihrem Land Cruiser in Richtung Süden unterwegs sind (liebe Grüsse an Karin und Sam) und verbringen eine leider sehr regnerische Nacht auf einem der Campingplätze entlang des Highways. Mit Freistehen ist hier nämlich nichts – ausser man will eine saftige Busse bezahlen.
Along the crashing sea, we cruise south. Around every rank a new coastal landscape immersed in mist appears. We meet a Swiss couple who are also heading south with their Land Cruiser (greetings to Karin and Sam) and spend a very rainy night on one of the campsites along the highway. Free standing is not an option here – unless you want to pay a hefty fine.
Man ahnt nichts Böses, biegt um eine Kurve und hat dann plötzlich diesen grässlichen Geruch in der Nase. Wir denken erst «hier müssen wohl irgendwelche Abwasserleitungen ins Meer gehen» und dann erspähen wir aber den tatsächlichen Grund: Am Strand tummeln sich die ersten Ankömmlinge einer riesigen Schaar Elefanten Robben. Es scheint als könnten sie nicht eine Sekunde lang ruhig liegen. Immer kommt einer, der sich zwischen die anderen quetschen will und diese keifen und grunzen dann ihrem Unmut entsprechend zurück. Wir sehen dem Treiben über eine Stunde lang zu. Auch der Geruch sollte uns im Auto und in unseren Kleidern noch eine Weile lang begleiten.
One suspects nothing bad, turns a corner and then suddenly has this horrible smell in the nose. First we think «here must be some sewage pipes going into the sea» and then we discover the real reason: on the beach the first arrivals of a huge flock of elephant seals are gathering. It seems as if they could not lie still for a second. There is always one who wants to squeeze between the others and they bicker and grunt back according to their displeasure. We watch the scene for more than an hour. Also the smell should accompany us in the car and in our clothes then still for a while.
In oder besser auf Pismo Beach legen wir einen Übernachtungsstopp ein. Es ist erlaubt auf einem grossen Teil des Strandabschnittes und der Dünen rumzufahren, was auch sehr viele Amerikaner mit ihren ATVs und Quads nur zu gerne tun. Leider ist es nach einem wunderschönen Sonnenuntergang dann doch wieder zu kalt, um draussen zu verweilen so verziehen wir uns zu einem Filmabend schnell nach drinnen.
In or better on Pismo Beach we stop for the night. It is allowed to drive around on a large part of the beach section and the dunes, which many Americans do with their ATVs and quads only too gladly. Unfortunately, it is after a beautiful sunset then again too cold to linger outside so we quickly move to a movie night indoors.
Pismo Beach zeigt sich auch am nächsten Morgen von seiner besten Seite: Wir können beim Kaffee trinken einen tollen Regenbogen bestaunen. Auf dem Strand geht es dann wieder zur Hauptstrasse und auf dem Highway Number One in Richtung Süden.
Pismo Beach also shows its best side the next morning: We can marvel at a great rainbow while drinking coffee. On the beach, we then return to the main road and head south on Highway Number One.
Die Stadt Los Angeles werden wir nicht besuchen. Ein kurzer Stopp beim «The original Muscle Beach» in Santa Monica liegt aber drin. Die Übernachtung davor verbringen wir in den Malibu Hills. Ja ihr habt richtig gelesen: Das ist da wo die Schönen und Reichen und ganz schön Reichen in ihren riesigen Villen wohnen. Einer der Hügel war nämlich noch unbebaut.
We will not visit the city of Los Angeles. But a short stop at «The original Muscle Beach» in Santa Monica is on the agenda. The night before we spend in the Malibu Hills. Yes, you have read that correctly: That’s where the rich and beautiful and the extremely rich live in their huge villas. One of the hills was still vacant.
Mit dem Besuch bei Santa Monica Beach ist für uns die Zeit an der Westküste Kaliforniens zu Ende. Die letzten Tage in den USA werden wir im Joshua Tree National Park verbringen und dann den Grenzübertritt nach Mexico in Angriff nehmen.
With the visit to Santa Monica Beach, our time on the west coast of California has come to an end. We will spend the last days in the USA in Joshua Tree National Park and then tackle the border crossing to Mexico.
